Who doesn’t enjoy reminiscing about the ‘90s? Growing up in the ‘90s was great! We were just getting started with the internet (so long, dial-up!). There were tamagotchis, Push Pops, Ring Pops, slap bracelets, fanny packs, gel pens, and so much more. We watched Friends, Seinfeld, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air… A trip to Blockbuster was still a thing. And most of all, we were introduced to LOTS OF ANIMATED SERIES that have long stayed with us into adulthood.
Of those animated series that we watched when we were younger, here is a list of some of the badass animated girls from the ‘90s. These girls made a mark on my childhood.
Misty from Pokemon
More than a supporting female lead, Misty wasn’t just a friend on a journey with Ash and Brock. She was a badass gym leader, a kind-hearted soul, and knew just how to set the boys straight. Misty was there to make sure Brock didn’t go all gaga and make a fool of himself in front of a pretty lady. And she was also a mom to cute little Togepi!
Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura
Cardcaptor Sakura was the magical girl anime that got me into anime. I watched it dubbed on Kids WB back then and was hooked ever since. There were few shows that I woke up at 7 a.m. fr on a Saturday morning. Sakura was an ordinary girl who found the Clow book of cards in her father’s basement library and accidentally released the cards, the mystical creatures that had magical powers that, without a Clow master, could wreak havoc. That’s a lot to take on for a fourth grader!
Any of the Sailor Guardians in Sailor Moon
How could I not include Sailor Moon on this list?! They were ordinary girls by day and fought evil by night. Personally, I loved Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter, and Sailor Venus the most when I was watching the series back then (in Mandarin dub, which was what my mom showed me).
The Powerpuff Girls
Sugar, spice, and everything nice. These girls protected the town they lived in from monsters and other forces of evil. I had a plushie of Blossom for the longest time! Though I identified more with Bubbles back then. Now, I think I’m definitely a Buttercup? How about you?
Ms. Frizzle from The Magic School Bus
Ok, technically Ms. Frizzle is a woman, not a girl, but hey… semantics, am I right??? Ms. Valerie Frizzle was the science teacher we all wanted in the ’90s. Ms. Frizzle had a MAGIC SCHOOL BUS to take her students on adventures! Like, actual adventures! This eccentric teacher was caring, optimistic, and hilarious. She taught us to “take chances, make mistakes, and get messy!” Because if you don’t take chances, you won’t get anywhere in life. And if you don’t make mistakes, how will you learn?
