Can you guys believe we’re about to enter a new decade? 2010 is now just a faint memory, perhaps for the better anyway.
A lot of exciting new things are upon us–new goals, new accomplishments, new memories, hopefully a new president that is logical and competent, and of course, a new Sailor Moon movie! That’s right Moonies, after all these painful years, you may now wipe your tears of longingness–2020 is finally here.

The new 2-part film Sailor Moon Eternal, the subsequent act to Sailor Moon Crystal, will release in Japan sometime next year. The exact date remains unknown still, but a special teaser released as part of the “Usagi Special Birthday Party 2019” event back in June, the birthday celebration of the fictional heroine Sailor Moon, whose real name is Usagi Tsukino.
Sailor Moon Eternal is confirmed to be an adaptation of the fourth arc of the manga, the “Dead Moon” or “Dream” arc.
Cast and Crew info
The excitement and expectations fans have for this film are soaring as we’re inching closer. Although it’s been three years since the announcement of this project–with no follow up details until recently–we do know that some of the previous season’s staff and cast will return.
The film will feature the series creator–the Moonie mother–Naoko Takeuchi, who is in charge of story crafting and project supervision. Chiaki Kon, director of the third season, will return alongside with the original Sailor Moon anime character designer, Kazuko Tadahado. And Kazuyuki Fudeyasu (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure) will script write.
As for the returning cast, we will have: Kotono Mitsuishi as Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon, Hisaki Kanemoto as Ami MIzuno/Sailor Mercury, Rina Satou as Rei Hino/Sailor Mars, Ami Koshimizu as Makoto Kino/Sailor Jupiter, Shizuka Itou as Minako Aino/Sailor Venus, and Misato Fukuen as Chibiusa/Sailor Chibi Moon.

There is now an official Japanese website for the Sailor Moon Eternal movies. The two-part film is a co-production between Toei Animation (the original studio behind the anime series since the 90’s) and Studio DEEN (some most recent works are Kochoki and Fruits Basket).
With the mentioning of Studio DEEN’s partnership, some fans expressed their concerns for the outcome of the movie. Nonetheless, still hopeful!
These concerns derive from DEEN’s long history of consistency in producing inconsistent work, and their latest censored work on Seven Deadly Sins hasn’t received much praise either, but that’s another topic.
A Faithful Approach
Sailor Moon Crystal is commended for taking a more faithful approach to adapting the manga on a 1:1 ratio. With the same director returning, the upkeep of this trend is expected. Another thing I think everyone is excited for is the new character designs. With the original character designer on this project, we could expect a mixture of art styles from both the Sailor Moon Crystal and the ‘90s Sailor Moon–contemporary with a dash of retro aesthetics, maybe?
